Suspect arrested in Dairy Queen robbery

Police have arrested a suspect in the Tuesday night robbery of a Port Huron Dairy Queen.

Port Huron Public Safety Director Michael Reaves said the man was taken into custody Thursday evening.

Reaves said further information was not immediately available.

Police responded to the Dairy Queen in the 1200 block of Military Street shortly before 6:40 p.m. Tuesday after it was reported a man with a machete threatened the employee inside and took cash.

Carter Smith, 19, said Wednesday the man entered the store and ordered a Blizzard.

As he rung up the order, Smith thought the man was going for his wallet, but he instead took out a machete.

The man then demanded Smith go to the back of the store, took cash from the register and fled.

"He pulled it out, he didn't just show it to me," said Smith, who has worked at the Dairy Queen for two years. "He was right up on me, right up against the register, it wasn't far away."

Smith said Wednesday the event has been difficult to face.

"If we can find him, that would make my day," he said. "That's just crazy to think he's still out there."

The suspect had been described as a white man, possibly in his mid-20's, about 6-feet tall, wearing a black and blue parka, black hoodie, gloves and a gray scarf of handkerchief with skulls on it over his face.

But while Smith's Tuesday shift was terrifying, he was back on the job Wednesday afternoon.

"I love the customers who come in, they make my day better, along with my coworkers and my boss...just a good group," he said.
