UPDATE: Police ID couple killed in wrong-way crash

PORT HURON TWP. – Police have identified the couple killed in a wrong-way crash Sunday night as Ira and Fay Crass.

The 83-year-old man and 81-year-old woman, both of Clarkston, were eastbound on the westbound anes of the Interstate 69 Business Loop just west of 32nd Street when they collided head-on with a westbound vehicle about 6 p.m., according to the St. Clair County Sheriff Department.

The westbound vehicle was driven by 46-year-old John Thayer of Shelby Township. Passengers in his vehicle were Sharon Thayer, 73, Donna Thayer, 46, Danielle Thayer, 16, and 11-year-old Evan Thayer.

All five people were taken to Lake Huron Medical Center, with Sharon Thayer later being taken to a Detroit hospital with critical injuries.

An 83-year-old Clarkston man and an 81-year-old Clarkston woman died following a crash on Interstate 69 shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday.

The crash remains under investigation. It is unknown why the Crass' were driving the wrong-way at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff department.
